Education Centre Library vertical file collection

Collection consists of pamphlets, articles, reports, and ephemera relating to North Bay and northeastern Ontario that were collected by the Education Centre Library for its vertical file (a collection of documents maintained by a library to provide easy access to information about frequently-requested topics; vertical files were especially popular before the rise of the Internet). The collection was created from the early 1970s, when the Library was founded, until the dissolution of the vertical file in the late 2000s.

Most files are arranged alphabetically by subject or by place name (in the case of items relating to communities other than North Bay).

The Northern Patriot

Item is a wartime magazine "published by the Woman's Canadian Club for patriotic purposes." Magazine contains: articles about the war effort and local military units; an honour roll of local men serving in the armed forces; local news and sporting news; advertisements for local businesses; descriptions of local clubs, churches, schools; and excerpts of letters from servicemen and nurses.

Regular issues

File contains 38 regular issues of The North Bay Nugget / The Nugget Daily News / The Nugget. Many issues contain front page articles about significant local events such as the anniversaries of the Ontario Northland Railway and North Bay Teacher's College, the Donald Kelly escape, and a tragic explosion that destroyed the Barry Building on McIntyre Street. Some issues are missing pages.

Capitol News

File contains three issues (one partial) of the Capitol News, a free weekly North Bay newspaper published by Commercial Press. Issues are dated 23 October 1930, 3 December 1931, and 26 May 1932.

22nd NORAD Region - North American Air Defence Command

Item is a booklet about the 22nd NORAD Region, which had its headquarters in North Bay. The stated aim of the booklet is "to provide the reader with an understanding of the Region's vital role in the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD)." The booklet also contains information about the construction, layout, and operation of the underground Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) installation in North Bay.

Item is a program from the ceremony for the presentation of a regimental guidon (pennant). Item contains a history of colours, order of ceremony, the Algonquin Regiment's battle honours, order of service for consecration of colours, history of the Algonquin Regiment, and a list of officers and warrant officers on parade.

Centennial edition

Item is a special edition of the North Bay Nugget published to celebrate the Canadian Centennial. The newspaper contains sections about: Mattawa and District; Temiskaming and District; Sturgeon Falls and District; Temagami, Latchford, Cobalt, Haileybury, New Liskeard, Earlton, Englehart; and the Parry Sound District.
