Fonds documents Surtees' work as a Professor of History at Nipissing University. The book of Timmins and the Porcupine

Item is a commemorative booklet published (by the Lions Club of Timmins?) for Timmins' Silver Jubilee, or twenty-fifth anniversary. Booklet contains a history of Timmins and the Porcupine mining district, an account of the anniversary celebrations, and maps, descriptions, and photographs of Timmins and other local communities and mines.

Champlain + Brule on Lake Nipissing

File documents the design of a bas relief commemorating the arrival of French explorers Samuel de Champlain and Etienne Brule at Lake Nipissing in 1615. File contains sketches by Hans Wiemer of the relief's design, a map titled "Exodus of Nipissing from Lake Nipissing to Lake Nipigon - 1650-1651," and a photograph of the relief.

The Northern Connection

Series documents Surtees' research for his book <i>The Northern Connection: Ontario Northland Since 1902</i> (published 1992), a history of the Ontario Northland Railway/Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway. Series is arranged into four subseries: interview audio recordings, interview files, maps and plans, and photographs. Series also contains other records created or collected by Surtees in the course of his research including correspondence, newspaper clippings, photocopies of archival records, Ontario Northland reports and newsletters, and ephemera.

Maps and plans

Subseries contains maps and technical drawings relating to the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway/Ontario Northland Railway or to transportation in northeastern Ontario. Technical drawings show rail lines, terminals, dikes, mines, and railway infrastructure.

File contains an unbound album of photographs that document the work of a (Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway?) surveying team in Northern Ontario from 1914 to around 1918. The album contains photographs (many captioned) depicting: the surveying crew at work and rest; winter travel with sleds and snowshoes; railway construction, including trestle building, laying rail, and construction equipment; railway cars, infrastructure, bridges, stations, and personnel; natural landscapes (such as river rapids and falls) and events (including floods, ice jams, a forest fire, and storm damage to trees); wild animals and pelts; a baseball club and field; transportation including canoes and a horse sled; a Hudson's Bay Company post and dog team; and the Revillon Brothers' schooner and post on James Bay. Locations depicted in the album include Elk Lake, Earlton, Gowanada Road, the Abbitibi River, Cochrane, Moose Factory, Matheson, Black River, New Liskeard, the Matogami River, Madawaska, and Haileybury.

File also contains a Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Commission baggage notice, and eight loose photographs (some of which appear to have come from the album) with subjects including surveying and transportation of railway ties by rail.

Photographs

Series contains photographs of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway/Ontario Northland Railway (ca. 1910-1953) that were given to Surtees by various donors for use in his book. Some photographs are accompanied by descriptive information and permissions to publish. Series also contains photographs taken by Surtees on research trips around northern Ontario of Ontario Northland Railway infrastructure, staff, and former employees he interviewed (1986-1991).
