Françoise Noël collection

Collection consists of records collected by Françoise Noël in the course of research for her book Nipissing: Historic Waterway, Wilderness Playground (Toronto: Dundurn Books, 2015), about the historical development of the tourism industry in the Nipissing District. The collection was assembled over approximately five years leading up to the book's publication. It contains maps, photographs, postcards, tourist guides and brochures, souvenir booklets, event programs, yearbooks, and other material relating to the history of North Bay and the Nipissing District, especially the tourist industry. The collection is arranged into five series based on documentary form.

Noël, Françoise

Analytical chemistry certificate

Item is a framed certificate awarded by the Ontario College of Pharmacy certifying that Arthur Cecil Rorabeck of Collingwood "has attended a practical course in Analytical Chemistry, and has passed a satisfactory examination in this subject."

File contains two issues of a French Catholic newspaper published weekly in Mattawa. The two issues are: volume 1, number 25 ( June 21, 1895) and vol. 3, unknown number (April 30, 1897).

Series consists of photographs and postcards, mostly of North Bay and the Nipissing District.

Postcards

File contains postcards of North Bay and other locations in and near the Nipissing District including: the French River, Lake Nipissing, Trout Lake, Lake Nosbonsing, Sturgeon Falls, Mattawa, Nipissing, Callander, Lavigne, Bonfield, Monetville, Saint Charles and Port Loring. The postcards depict: tourist attractions (such as parks, lakes, beaches, rivers, and waterfalls), tourist accommodations (including hotels, cottages, resorts, and camps), city scenes and buildings (including schools, railway stations, churches, municipal buildings, hospitals, and factories), the Dionne Quintuplets, the Chief Commanda steam ship, and trains.

File also contains a few postcards of other places including Temagami, Timmins, Cobalt, Lake Superior, Pembroke, Haileybury, Owen Sound, and Prince Rupert, BC. File additionally includes several souvenir folders containing postcards of Ontario, North Bay, and humorous cartoons.

Conolly Family postcards and photographs

File contains a postcard collection that was created by the Conolly Family, a pioneering family in South River. The collection consists of a postcard album and loose postcards. Postcards include photographs of South River (including the chemical plant and the Conolly home [?]), Sundridge, Magnetawan, Trout Creek, Huntsville, Toronto, and Vegreville (Alberta), as well as holiday greeting postcards received by the family.

J. A. Noel portraits

File contains studio portraits (some in presentation folders or mounted on board) that were taken by J. A. Noel, a North Bay photographer. Photographs include a first communion portrait and a wedding portrait.

In God is my trust

Item is a print depicting a collection of biblical and Masonic symbols of the Loyal Orange Institution within a Romanesque arch decorated with patriotic symbols. The print features the Institution's watchwords (Union, Truth, Love, Loyalty) and the slogans "In God is my trust," and "Honor all men. Love the Brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King."

North Bay Teachers' College fonds

Fonds consists of records generated by North Bay Teachers' College while carrying out activities relating to the provision of post-secondary teacher education in North Bay. The fonds documents activities such as administration (including human resources and property management), admissions, and grading of students. The fonds also documents student life through yearbooks, event programs, and student magazines, as well as class reunions of college alumni. Most of the records were created or accumulated during the years of the college's existence (1909-1973), although some records (such as the alumni class reunion booklets) appear to have been added at a later date because they relate to the the college.

The fonds is arranged into six series according to documentary form or activity. Several files and items are not part of any series, as they do not relate to a common activity or share a documentary form. Records are mostly textual and principle documentary forms include registers of admissions and grades, yearbooks, academic calendars, and alumni class reunion booklets.

Minute books

Series documents lodge meetings, including meetings of the Lodge's Royal Blue and Royal Arch Purple degrees. Series consists of minute books, some of which, in addition to meeting minutes, also contain roll calls of officers and attendees, and lists of degrees granted, withdrawals, and deaths.

Membership and minute book

Item contains membership lists and minutes of lodge meetings. Membership lists contain: member number and name; dates of admission by initiation and by certificate; Purple, Blue, and R[oyal] A[rch] P[urple] degrees; date of withdrawal by certificate; suspension, expulsion, and other remarks.

Item is a roll book containing membership information and record of attendance and dues paid. Recorded information includes: member number, name, age, occupation, post office address, how admitted (by initiation or certificate), date of admission, arrears, and a monthly record of attendance and dues paid.

Series consists of tourist guides and brochures about Ontario generally and North Bay and area specifically. Series consists of two sub-series: North Bay and area; Ontario.

Lake Nipissing and the French River

Item is a tourist brochure published by the Grand Trunk Railway System with information about Lake Nipissing and the French River. The brochure contains five maps of Grand Trunk Railway lines in parts of Ontario. Maps are titled: The Highlands of Ontario - Including Muskoka Lakes Dist[rict], Lake of Bays Dist[rict], Magnetawan River Dist[rict], 30,000 islands of Georgia Bay, Kawartha Lakes Dist[rict] ; Eastern section of Georgian Bay ; Huntsville and Lake of Bays, Muskoka District ; Kawartha Lakes District; Lake Nipissing District and Temagami Region.

History, title to property

File documents the granting of land for the North Bay Normal School and subsequent land disputes relating to the property. File contains: an indenture transferring plots of land from the Municipal Corporation of North Bay for the construction of the school; correspondence regarding a dispute over ownership and agricultural use of the school's property; and records relating to an application by North Bay landowners to the Board of Railway Commissioners of Canada for compensation for damages caused by construction of the Canadian Northern Railway.

File also contains two items relating to the history of the North Bay Teachers' College, a pamphlet from 1959 about the college's history, and a photocopy of an article entitled "North Bay Schools" from "The Northern Patriot" magazine, 1917.

Administration

Series documents the administration of the college including course scheduling, the management of staff, students, and property, and the discontinuation of the college. The series is arranged into subject files containing meeting minutes, timetables, oaths, agreements, staff and student lists, and correspondence.

Graves, Bigwood and Company fonds

Fonds documents logging production at a shanty (winter logging camp) near Whitestone, Ontario. Fonds contains one logging record book.

Logging record book

Item is a book recording the daily number of logs cut, skidded, and hauled for Graves, Bigwood and Company at a shanty, or winter lumber camp, near Whitestone. The shanty is recorded as having been specifically situated on "Lot 15, Con[cession] 7. Hagerman," with the logs being hauled out on Steidler Creek and Whitestone Lake. It appears that each shanty was required to maintain and present such a record book to inspecting woodrangers from the Woods and Forests Branch of the Ontario Department of Lands and Mines. The book contains an affidavit by clerk Cha[rle]s Ramsay attesting to it being a true record of work done.

Admissions registers

Series documents the admission of new students to North Bay Normal School/Teachers' College from 1909 to 1958. The series contains two types of registers: entrance registers, which cover the period 1909-1958, and signature and address registers, for the years 1909-1945. Entrance registers contain new students' contact and personal information, including any prior teaching experience or training. Signature and address registers contain declarations by candidates for admission that they intend to prepare for the teaching profession, as well as their contact information during the session (academic year). Registers are arranged chronologically.

Ewart Kenneth Fockler collection

The collection consists of geological maps, aerial photographs, and mining and geology publications collected by Fockler during the course of his career as a consulting geologist. The collection also contains material relating to a mineral exploration in northern Quebec that Fockler was involved with in the 1940s.

The collection is arranged into five series: Air photos of northern Ontario and Quebec; Air photos of Ontario highways; Geological maps; Mining and geology publications; New Quebec mineral exploration project.
